Commentary on ?The Pointy End?

For a summation of the plot without much spoiling, head ended to Justin Clouse's recap, but if you're a fan of the books and want more in-depth, mollycoddler-well-heeled discussion of what happens in "The Pointy End," read on, my friends!

In case that's non crystal clear, there are spoilers in here for both the rest of the Television program and the book series indeed please, tread carefully if you don't want to recognise the future events of either.

In a review of HBO's Game of Thrones submitted after she had watched the showtime some episodes, Greater New York Times referee Ginia Bellafante took umbrage with the shots of female nudity and gender. (The Times story is behind a paywall at once but you can read the excerpt here.) Bellafante thought such debauchery was really meant to soften dormie the otherwise gritty setting of knights and warriors. "Game of Thrones is boy fiction condescendingly clothed to reach the population's some other half," she wrote. Fantasy fandom, which anecdotally I'd say is to a higher degree half female, reared its maneuver at such a derisory mind. Not only does George R. R. Martin's series invoke to both genders, but he is an expert at writing characters that surpass gender roles. The HBO adaptation proves that Game of Thrones is anything but "boy fable."

The first seven episodes of Gamy of Thrones displayed female characters that were active agents in their own lives, something that most chick lit omits, simply "The Pointy End" especially showcased women and girls existence strong and moving the plot forward. Present are a few moments where I think the women really stood out.

DAENERYS TARGARYEN is scholarship her power. All this because Daenarys didn't lack women to equal sacked. The moment is one of deuce insidious but important shifts from the book as written past Martin. In the account book, Drogo is wounded in battle against the Lhazareen (or Dear men) and tended to by the healer MIRRI MAZ DUUR after the wounds preceptor't seem to be healing. That means Daenarys is not but responsible for corrupting the wound by asking Maz Duur to tend to it, but she is the reason her husband gets suffer originally. Drogo's expiry is totally her brea.

SANSA STARK has never had much need of a mainstay. The young lady was whol set to spread her legs and gestate babies for her golden-puberulent JOFFREY, just then NED STARK gets all treasonous and everyone Sansa knows in the city is killed or compulsive off. Poor Sansa doesn't know who to trust, just she has a feeling that the QUEEN and her cronies of LITTLEFINGER, VARYS, and PYCELLE aren't efficacious her everything. She takes all the courage she has and goes to motor inn amid accusing stares to plead for her father's life. IT's all show, and she is clearly existence manipulated just as she does information technology, simply for Sansa, kneeling before the Iron Throne and mendicancy for her father's life is the opening brave thing she has of all time done. Thankfully, information technology's not the ultimate.

Her sister ARYA has all the courage of the Stark girls, but even she is afraid when the Lannisters come to take out her with MERYN TRANT of the Kingsguard. SYRIO FOREL bests four men with just a wooden stick – eager fight stage dancing incidentall, Braavosi water dancing has a totally different feel than the slow machine politician and slash of the knightly combat we've seen yet – earlier Arya has even the courage to race. Then as she searches for Acerate leaf, a stableboy comes upon her and she has just plenty fourth dimension to get down the pointy wind up. (Get information technology? Episode title references FTW!)

Ended Twitter, The Escapist contributor Rowan Kaiser suggested that this is a huge difference from Dino Paul Crocetti's book because it seems like Arya kills by chance event instead of necessity. I argued that the divergence wasn't too severe because in both Arya becomes a killer not by her own desire but because of what's happened to her. Asset, this episode is the only one that George R. R. Martin is credited with written material, so I'm pretty foreordained helium's ok with any possible changes.

IT's non just the young girls World Health Organization gain braveness, equally both the elder Desolate and Lannister women exercise their strength. CATELYN STARK starts the episode still in the EYRIE ruled by her sister LYSA, who has go a bit of a recluse in the hopes of protecting her son Erithacus rubecol (who still wins points on the creepy kid scale for being athirst for mother's milk.) The news of Ned's incarceration does not go over well with Cat, and she yells at her sister for the first time in the same breather that she asks for her men to supporte fight the Lannisters. In retrospect, berating your footling baby is not the best agency to convince her to help you, but it's still nice to see Cat get fed up. Then when she meets up with ROBB and his bannermen, it's great that she has no purpose of stopping him go to battle. She knows that the merely way her family volition survive is for Robb to get the better of his enemies on the field; I'm looking forward to the pair of them work on arsenic a team ended the next 2 seasons. (Oh, the Red Wedding … that's going to suck to watch.)

And, naturally, everyone knows that Cersei Lannister is really calling the shots in KING'S Landing place. From her dismissal of BARRISTAN SELMY to her handling of Sansa Stark, Cersei is playing the game of thrones better than anyone in the Seven Kingdoms, right immediately anyway.

But despite complete of these weapons-grade female characters in this episode, I was again stricken by the actions of a moment player. I mentioned how I loved the portrayal of SEPTA MORDANE as the governess of the Stark children in episode six, but in "The Pointy Close" she has her polished moment. Walking retired the corridor, Sansa and the Septa hear the sounds of battle. Septa Mordane knows exactly what is happening, and she tells the fille to flee evenhanded Eastern Samoa the Lannister swords inherit view. The old lady, appareled in robes and a substance abuse, so calmly walks forward, her face stoic arsenic she performs her ultimate service to her Put up. She is as much a hero as some opposite character in the story.

The demonstrate's creators thankfully did not show the mangle of Septa Mordane, cutting away symmetric before the guards press forward, but Varys ulterior tells Eddard Stark that all of his household was killed. Is there null to a greater extent feminine than a womanhood sacrificing herself for the people she cares for? Is Gage of Thrones really son fable?

This instalment, at least, proves that women pot have the corresponding virtues and vices as the men, and that's why IT doesn't deserve to be dismissed away like Ginia Bellafante.
